About

Built by a screenwriter,
for screenwriters.

Who made this?

I'm Hugo Thomas, a French writer and director based in Rome. My first feature film, Willy 1er, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the ACID selection (2016). Juniors, my second, screened at festivals worldwide. Both are on Netflix. Before that, my shorts Perrault, La Fontaine, Mon Cul! and Ich Bin Eine Tata both won awards at Clermont-Ferrand, the largest short film festival in the world.

Why it exists

I spent years formatting scripts by hand and fighting software that was not built for the way writers actually work. Final Draft feels like the nineties to me. I love a vintage look, but emailing licence codes around every time someone needs to read a scene, that is where I stop.

Everything I write already lives in Google Docs. So instead of asking anyone to move, I put the formatting where the writing already happens. You press Enter and Tab, the script formats itself, and you share it the way you share any other document.

The team

It stopped being a one-person project a while ago. These are the people who build it with me.

How it grew

Screenplay Editor started in 2025 as a prototype I built for my own scripts. I showed it to a few writer friends, they asked to keep it, and it went from there.

Today thousands of screenwriters write with it. Last month alone it was used in 63 countries, on six continents, from film schools in Singapore and Las Vegas to writers' rooms in England.

In August 2026, L'Essor Savoyard, the paper from the corner of the French Alps I grew up in, ran a piece about it. In French, and behind their subscription.

Schools, universities and writing teams

Teachers run it in the classroom and writing teams use it together. If you're bringing it to a school, a film program or a team, I set up access and invoicing for you directly. See the schools and teams page, or just write to me.
