What Fountain says, and what a .fdx records

Fountain hides the type in the punctuation

A Fountain file does not say what a line is. It lets you work it out from the punctuation and from the blank lines around it, which is why the format is pleasant to write and awkward to convert. The converter reads all of it: the forced elements you wrote with a leading dot, an at sign or a greater-than sign, the title page at the top, and the notes and boneyard you left in the margins.

A .fdx says it out loud

Final Draft records the type of every paragraph inside the file, so once the reading is done the writing is exact. Your sections and synopses stay out of the .fdx, because they are your working notes and not part of the screenplay. Bold and italic go too, since a screenplay carries neither.

Will Final Draft open a .fdx that another program wrote?
Yes. A .fdx file is XML, and Final Draft opens one written by anything as long as the paragraph types are the ones it expects. The file this page gives you carries the same six types Final Draft uses: scene heading, action, character, parenthetical, dialogue and transition.
What happens to my title page?
It comes along. Fountain puts the title page in labelled lines at the top of the file, and those become the centred title page Final Draft shows before page one. You can also leave it behind with the checkbox above.
What about dual dialogue?
Two speeches written side by side with a caret come out one after the other. A single column is what survives everywhere, and losing the side by side layout is easier to repair than losing a speech.
Is my screenplay uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside this page, on your own computer. The file never leaves your browser, nothing is stored, and there is no account to create.
